With a boat load of research on the use of static stretches before exercise or competition, it’s pretty conclusive that it’s not an ideal tool to use. Static stretching is used to enhance flexibility which before training or competition is not what an individual needs to be promoting. Instead, the individual should be looking to move safely and appropriately through normal range of motion with speeds needed within the training session and/or sport. Adding traditional flexibility work pre training may add to joint instability via the new joint angle created. We would generally advise any specific flexibility work to be done away from training at another time.
